a few weeks ago, i bought a ukulele.
i learned three codes, and made two songs based on one children's science book.
i can't play fast enough to keep up with the rhythm...mmm...and i don't really know how to edit things right...well, i tried.

きょうの実験。

家にいて。
うちのひとはお互いが出かけるときになると、かならず玄関まで見送りに行く。玄関まで一緒に歩いて、戸を開けて『いってらっしゃい』『いってきます』、と声をかけあう。だれかに見送られると安心する。そういうひとといる生活はいいなあ，と思った。

雨宿りして。
このあいだ外を歩いていたらいきなり雨が降ってきた。ぽつん、から始まって数十秒後にはざーざー降って、しまいには雷までなってきた。傘を持ってなかったので先にあった建物の軒先で雨宿りをさせてもらって、雨雲が通り過ぎるのを待った。傘を持っていてもどうしようもない、ただ待つほかないような勢いの雨が二十分ほど続いた。道路の表面にたまりだした水を見ながら、すごくうれしくなった。こんな雨のように自分にも誰にも手におえない力が存在する事が、なんやらすごくうれしかった。

そのほか。
牛乳は，世界で一番おいしい飲み物だと思う。
牛乳がなかったら生きていけん。

さいきん。
日本語が聞き取れない。ので、バイト先では失敗ばかりです。
かなりへこむ。

this book talks about everything i've been interested in; from art in public context to contemporary notions of "site" in art - activism. i think i'll end up referring this book a lot in my thesis writing. it's very exciting to come across a book that articulates what i've been thinking perfectly in written form. it's like all the pieces in my brain finally come together as one clear thought. i wish i could think and write as critically as she does...

jetlag, homesick, job hunting, and joy of making

i came back to japan last thursday. i'll be staying in Osaka until maybe the end of July.

i've got a few part-time job interviews lined up this week. i want to start working asap...

i also started working on a new project - すきまの間. in this project, i'd like to re-examine the boundary between so-called "public" and "private", and see what happens when the conventional notion of and physical state of the boundary is intervened. so far im thinking of choosing slits of space between houses in urban residential areas as a site. anyway, we'll see how it goes.

oye, i really want to get over this jet-lag. i couldn't fall asleep, so i went for a walk in my neighborhood. that was about an hour ago. hmmmm....

metal epiphany

i've been learning some metal work for my new project.
welding has been the most exciting part of the process so far.
i want to try the torch next.

i can't really think of any better way to describe it, but for the first time, i felt material talking to me. you'll know when you are doing good welding because the metal will tell you. you can feel it in your fingertips.

it was sort of an amazing moment for me - i had always wondered that my attitude toward material is too forceful: forcing material falsely to become whatever i wanted it to be, rather than working out a design based on its material properties and behaviors. through this experience, i feel like i finally found a clue to working with material in the latter way. so, yay!
